Everything that surrounds us is part of the environment. Not just living
things like plants and animals but also beaches and mountains, the air we
breathe, the sunlight that provides warmth and weather that we use in our homes, schools,
and businesses.





Humans like ourselves may
have lived on earth more than 300.000 years. For a long time people thought the
earth was huge that it could easily absorb human wastes and pollution. And they
thought the earth's natural resources would never be used up in prehistoric times.
People killed animals for food and built fires to cook food and keep themselves
warm. They cut down trees for fuel, and their fires released pollution into the
air. But there were so few people that their activities had little Impact on
the environment.





All human beings and animals
need air to survive. Without air we would die. plants also need air to live. Plants
use sunlight and the carbon dioxide to make food, and then give off oxygen. We
all breathe the air that surrounds Earth, the air is made up mainly of gases.
Human beings breathe more than six quarts of air every minute. Because air is
so basic to life, it is very important to keep the air clean by reducing or
preventing air pollution.





Today, air pollution
causes health problems and may bring about acid rain, global warming, and a
break down of the ozone layer.
